NATO Reinforces Defense Against Russian Drones with New "Merops" System
In recent weeks, reports have increased of unidentified drones entering the airspace of NATO countries, especially on the eastern flank of Europe. These incursions have raised security concerns and exposed vulnerabilities in the Alliance's air defense system. In response, NATO began to install a new drone identification and neutralization system: Merops.

What is the Merops system?
Merops is a North American system designed to detect and neutralize hostile drones quickly and efficiently.
One of its main advantages is the compact size - the equipment fits in the trunk of a common van, and can be easily transported and installed at different strategic points.
In addition, Merops uses Artificial Intelligence to operate even when satellite signals and electronic communications are blocked - a common tactic in electronic warfare scenarios.
Why is it being installed?
In recent months, more than 20 Russian drones have been registered entering Poland's airspace. Similar situations occurred in Romania, and sightings also led to the temporary closure of airports in Copenhagen, Munich, Berlin and Brussels.
The problem:
→ Extremely expensive military fighters have been mobilized to intercept low-cost drones.
This generates significant economic and operational wear and tear for NATO countries.
Merops emerges as a much cheaper and faster alternative.
How does it work?
The system acts on two fronts:
Precise detection:
Differentiate drones from birds or aircraft, avoiding false alarms.
Intelligent neutralization:
You can:
Approach the hostile drone,
Interfere with your systems,
Or provide data for another unit to take it down.
In summary, Merops fights drones with drones.
Where is it being installed?
The first systems are already being implemented in:
Poland
Romania
Denmark
The idea is to strengthen NATO's entire eastern border, from Norway to Turkey, creating a deterrent barrier against Russia's incursions.
The growing use of drones in modern conflicts is forcing countries and military alliances to quickly adapt their strategies.
With Merops, NATO prepares to face a new generation of air threats in a more efficient, accessible and technological way.
